December 2022
Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Government’s principal arts investment, development, and advisory body, and INCUBATE, the University of Sydney’s Flagship Startup Program, today announced the launch of their strategic collaboration for a digitally-delivered Pre-Accelerator Program to support the Australian arts community. The Program provides members of the arts community with the knowledge, skills, and network to test and scale their startup ideas into businesses.

This program will deliver on the fundamental priority outlined within The Australia Council of the Arts Digital Culture Strategy, which sets out the vision to digitally enable a thriving arts and cultural industry. With INCUBATE’s decade-long track record of successfully delivering digitally-enabled Pre-Accelerator Programs, they are uniquely positioned to provide the expertise and industry connections to support entrepreneurs on their startup journey.

With the pilot program launching in February 2023, applications are now open for the 12-week program to connect and empower creative entrepreneurs to commercialize their startup ideas, as opportunities within the digitization of the arts industry continue to grow. The program is aimed at artists and arts workers who are creating digital products that are in service to or come out of a need seen in the creative industries.

“As the creative sector grapples with the impact of digital disruption, there is a need for new approaches to ensure sustainable business models and incomes for creative work. We can look to other industries, such as the technology and start-up sectors, for learnings on how to develop entrepreneurial skills and monetisation. We are excited to collaborate with INCUBATE to deliver this bespoke program for the creative industries that seek to unlock new value for artists and arts organisations with digitally centred business and product ideas.” said Adam McGowan - Director Industry Initiatives, The Australia Council for the Arts.

The program will be accessible to Australia-wide applicants within the arts and creative sector that have recognized a business opportunity within their industry or are equipped with an entrepreneurial idea and who are ready to test, pivot, and create a feasible, viable and desirable business.
